The first Albanian book known to date is Gjon Buzuku's "Meshari", from 1555. But there is direct and indirect evidence that suggests that the beginnings of Albanian writing and Albanian literature must be earlier than the 16th century.
The very form of writing and language embedded in Gjon Buzuku's work proves that it must have inherited a tradition before it.
